Frequently asked questions

What is the deadline?

Online returns must be filed by 31 January after the end of the tax year (5 April). Paper returns are due by 31 October.

I have just started working for myself. What do I do?

Register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the end of the tax year in which you started. We can register you and obtain your UTR.

What if I have missed the deadline?

HMRC charges an automatic £100 penalty, with more after three months. File as soon as possible — we can help you catch up and, where there is a reasonable excuse, appeal.
